A Picklist is a list of the record
titles retrieved by Guided Search. The Picklist displays 10 records at a time unless you
have changed this default setting in Settings.
To select records from the Picklist, click the box(es) next to the record title(s) or
click Select All. To clear the boxes, click Select None.
When you have selected the records and the Output and Format options that you want,
click Display/Send to display or send the
selected records.
Output Specifications
Output specifications let you get detailed rate information for selected records, specify
a record format, and specify where you want the selected records to display or be
delivered.
- Show Rates
The Price information shown on the Picklist display is the per record price for the Full
Record format. To get more information on record prices click Show Rates.
- Format
The format you select determines the amount of information that displays for each
record. Full Record is the default. The Format drop-down list contains the following
format options:
- Free - all the available information that can be provided at no cost
- Full Record Format - displays the full record including the text or abstract and images
when available
- Medium - displays a bibliographic citation and a word count or equivalent summary
information
- Key Word in Context - displays in 30-word sections (approximately the 15 words preceding
and the 15 words following) the parts of the record that contain your search term (not
available for all databases)
- Destination
You can specify where you want to display or send the records. The options are:
- Browser - displays records in the Dialog Web browser window
- Browser for Print Save - opens a new browser window that displays only the records
- Email, Fax, Postal Address - lets you specify an email address, fax number, or postal
address for sending records
Modify Specifications
Modify specifications let you change the Picklist display.
- Sort
You can change the display order of the titles in the Picklist by selecting a
sort option and clicking Sort. When you sort the Picklist, all titles are
renumbered and redisplayed. For example, if you are viewing
titles 21-30 of 315 and you sort the Picklist, all 315 titles are sorted and the
Picklist displays items 1-10 from the newly sorted list.
- Sort options are available only for those fields that are common to all the databases in the search. Therefore, the sort options will vary.
- If you have selected one of the options for default sorting on the Settings page, Picklists for Dynamic Searches will automatically be sorted in the order selected.
You can always re-sort the list by a different sort option.
- A maximum of 50,000 titles may be sorted for all sort options except Relevance; sorting by Relevance has a maximum of 50 titles.
- Remove Duplicates
Remove Duplicates is a Dynamic Search option. It removes duplicate titles from
the Picklist. A maximum of 5,000 records may be processed for removing duplicates. DialogWeb automatically removes duplicate titles from most Targeted Search
Picklists.
- Refine Search and Back to
Search
If you have requested a Targeted Search, click Back to Search to redisplay the search
form. You can edit, add, or delete information on the form. If you have requested a
Dynamic Search, click Refine Search to display detailed information on your search. You
can use this information to modify your search criteria.
Other Picklist Features
- Navigation
Your search category selections display as links at the top of the Picklist. To return to
a category, click the category link.
- Search Terms
For your convenience, an abbreviated version of your search terms and options displays at
the top of the Picklist.
- Save As Alert
You can save your search strategy as a Dialog Alert. The Dialog Alert service
lets you store a search and have it run automatically when a database is updated
or according to a schedule you set up. The
stored search is run against the new items in the database and the results are sent to you
immediately by email, fax, or U.S. mail. You can access your Alerts from the Favorites
list under Quick Functions in New Search.
- Save Search Strategy Only
You can save your search strategy and recall it to run a new search.
- Previous and Next
Use the Previous and Next options to move through the Picklist.
- Show Warnings
This feature displays only if an warning message is logged during the processing
of your search. To display the warning message, click the Show Arnings link. The display
includes a brief statement on the cause of the warning. Warning message display in a
separate browser window.
Note: If you are searching in a full-text market research database,
the titles of the available reports display in a
Report Picklist.
When you select a title from a Report Picklist, a second Picklist displays. This list
contains the Table of Contents or Section Headings of the report and you can select all or
part of the report to display or send.
