DialogWeb Help: The EXPAND Display

In response to the EXPAND command DialogWeb displays a list of 50 index terms. At the left side of the list is a "Ref" column that contains sequential reference numbers preceded by an E, for example E1, E2, E3, etc. These E numbers identify the index entries in the EXPAND and they can be used in a SELECT statement, for example s e1.

There is also an "Items" column in the EXPAND display. This column lists the number of unique records containing each term. The term may occur more than once in a given record, but the record is counted only once for the "Items" column. You can determine the total number o occurrences of a term by entering the command set postings on before entering the EXPAND command.

The list of "Index Terms" appears on the right of the display. The term entered with the EXPAND command is usually the third item in the list and is marked with an asterisk (*). It is included in the list even if there are no items (records) containing the term. Multiple-word entries in the Basic Index are terms, such as descriptors, that have been phrase indexed.

To move through the EXPAND display, use the scroll bar. Enter a PAGE command to display the next 50 terms.

Note: After a PAGE command, a new list of terms replaces the current list and the new terms are renumbered starting with E1. The previous list of 50 terms cannot be redisplayed.
